The department of MRI together with the CT department form a neuroradiology unit within the Clinic of Radiology, which is situated in the building of the Clinic of Neurology in Kateřinská street n. 30. The MRI device (Gyroscan NT15 by Philips, 1,5 T) was installed in year 1995 and its trial operation was started in early 1996. During the time of its introduction, the technical parameters of the machine were on top level. With further research and development it was necessary to upgrade the device by new hardware and software which was performed in year 2005 (Intera 11). Current technical equipment is comparable to top machines in the world. Despite the fact that the needs of the hospital and the tradition of the department focus mainly on neuroradiology, we perform examination from all fields of medicine suitable for the modality (examination of joints, breast, pelvis, vessels, heart...). These examinations are not only provided for the General University Hospital but also for other medical facilities and ambulatory specialists. We have examined more than 50,000 patients with 65,000 examinations. In January 2010 a second 1,5T MRI device by Phillips was installed, funded by Integrated operational program of EU (IOP) which performs various examinations mainly to oncology and internal medicine patients. We perform routine MRI examinations of liver, biliary tree and also imaging of fistulas in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. In patients from the Clinic of Gynecology pelvic examinations are performed maily for staging of cervical cancer.

A Complex Cardio-vascular Center (KKVC) was established in the General University Hospital in 2010. In cooperation with cardiologists of all Clinics of Internal Medicine we also perform cardiac MRI routinely. A software equipment enables us a detailed analysis of functional parameters of heart with a good image resolution. In accord with current worldwide trends MRI becomes a golden standard for imaging of a number of cardiovascular pathologies in our department.

In this department more than 160 publications in national and international journals were published during the last 10 years as well as 2 monographies, many chapters in the literature; we participated on 15 grant projects, 1 research project by the Ministry of Education and 2 research projects by the Ministry of Healthcare. Also more than 250 lectures were held on national and international congresses and symposia. Our department obtained an approval for postgraduate studies of neuroradiology, participates on education of medical students in the subject of Radiology, Neurology and Biophysics and many different types of bachelor studies.
